When It's Time to Stop “Toughing Out” Menstrual Pain

For most women, we get the dreaded visit from Aunt Flo once a month. We all dread her and know she wrecks havoc on our lives causing pain, fatigue, ruining underwear and the list goes on. But when do you need to quit “toughing it out” and make an appointment with your OBGYN or midwife? Please contact your provider if you are experiencing:

  • Polymenorrhea or periods lasting shorter than 21 days apart.

  • Oligomenorrhea or periods occurring more than 35 days apart.

  • Periods that have always been regular then become irregular spontaneously

  • Periods lasting longer than 7 days

  • Bleeding between cycles

  • Dysmenorrhea or excessive pain, cramping, nausea or vomiting during your period.

  • Excessive bleeding- requiring multiple tampon/ sanitary pads throughout the night or requiring multiple tampons/sanitary pads within an hour over the course of several hours

  • Postmenopausal bleeding

  • Bleeding after sex

  • Unexplained weight loss or gain

Period discomforts and abnormalities are not normal but very COMMON. Please contact your provider with any concerns that you may have.
